In this position you will promote GM's values and consider the customer's needs in every material selection!Engine materials engineers provide materials engineering support to one or more teams as described below for both gas and diesel engines. The engine team supported will depend upon the expertise and experience level of the selected candidate for materials and processes commonly used in engines.This position requires sound technical knowledge and expertise related to the functional area of responsibility. You will need prior experience and/or knowledge of mechanical, instrumentation, electronics, testing/driving and fabrication. Translates business objectives to meaningful work for the group. Supports leading new processes and methods in line with departmental goals.* Recommend materials & processes* Provide materials-related content for engineering standard work, including BOM, BOD, BOP, SOR templates, drawings, and quality documents* Support evaluation and approval of approved suppliers* Stay abreast of new technology and competitor products* Provide material specifications and establish performance requirements* Review and approve drawings* Participate in cost-saving & warranty-reduction efforts* Facilitate materials laboratory analyses* Interact regularly with design engineers, manufacturing engineers, CAE engineers, suppliers, purchasing and other materials engineers* Provide material properties for CAE* Resolve environmental issues* Able to solve complex problems, often with incomplete information, to arrive at a root cause* Support/lead advanced material technology development* Travels as required, including internationalAdditional Job DescriptionRequired:* BS Degree in Metallurgy, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or Material Science* Minimum 3 years' experience as a materials engineer or metallurgist* Detailed knowledge of industry recognized material standards - GM, SAE, ASTM, ISO, JIS, etc.* Familiarity with common engine materials, prime forming processes, heat treat, joining and other metallurgical and chemical processes* Understanding of metallography and metallurgical microstructure evaluation* Strong analytical skills - for data analysis, design of experiments, failure analysis, and problem-solving* High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others* Able to manage numerous projects at the same time and prioritize as necessaryPreferred:* Familiarity with engine o
