Functional Overview

Whirlpool is looking for qualified candidates for the role of Lead Engineer Food Technology , Product Development . The role will be at our Edgewater Tech Center, in St Joseph, MI,

The Food Technology Lead Engineer will join the Cooking Performance Subsystem Team, which is responsible for new product development of freestanding ranges, built in ovens and cooktops globally. The Food Engineer will represent the voice of the customer in project teams with respect to cavity and cooktop culinary performance.

The Food Technology Lead Engineer will be responsible for the development and verification of culinary performance for freestanding ranges, built in ovens, and cooktops. They will own both the virtual and physical development of cooking accessories, cavity components, and the development of appliance algorithms to meet consumer expectations. The Food Technology Lead Engineer is the primary point of contact for food science and food chemistry related knowledge, and will serve as a key technical consultant to others within the corporation.

Job Responsibilities

  • Accountable for leading the Technical Design Review process across the global Food Technology team, and ensuring the proper project maturity levels are reached prior to each tollgate

  • Develop technical expertise throughout the organization, through coaching, mentoring, and capability development of global Food Tech engineers

  • Globally accountable for system level attribute performance to enable product leadership

  • Lead Performance attribute target setting for the subsystem

  • Translate the voice of the customer to system, subsystem, and component level requirements

  • Design and execution of cavity and cooktop components with respect to culinary performance including heating elements, convection systems, utensils, racks, trays, griddles, and grills

  • Creation, verification, and validation of advanced cooking and sensing algorithms to provide best in class culinary performance

  • Connect consumers to their kitchens in new ways as subject matter expert for Internet of Things and App Software teams

  • Technical project management, schedule, resource management, and risk analysis, related to modules, components, and algorithms owned

  • Lead through others with planning, training, and facilitation of laboratory technicians

  • Develop strong relationships with all key process partners

  • Continuously improve the planning, processes, and procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness

  • Key technical leadership through contribution to the development of the IP portfolio, patent attainment, and achievement of sustainable technology advantage

  • Lead systemic problem solving efforts to enable more predictable and robust designs

  • Accountable to develop technology and module roadmaps aligned to global product plans

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science

  • 5+ years of experience in Appliance, Consumer Goods, or Food Manufacturing Industry

  • 3+ years of experience with product development tools such as DFMEA ( Design Failure Mode Effect ), A3 (Problem Solving Form), DVP&R (Design Verification, Plan & Report) and Stage Gate Development Plan

  • 3+ years’ experience in Technical Project Management

Preferred Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree Food Engineering, Food Science or related science/engineering

  • Advanced knowledge of food chemistry and heat transfer

  • Kinetic modeling of reactions in food

  • Ability to analyze mechanical and electrical systems

  • Knowledge of control theory and control systems

  • Demonstrated project management and computer skills

  • Ability to travel within the US and to global design centers

  • Knowledge of consumer agency evaluation methodologies

  • Black Belt/Opex/Six Sigma certification

  • Systems Engineering Training/Certification

  • Strong critical thinking and issue resolution skills

  • Good Organizational, Communication, analytical, and Interpersonal akills

  • Strong initiative and self-drive
