DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:

Our Labor and Delivery department is a 24-hour inpatient unit consisting of 12 Labor-Delivery-Recovery suites, 4 Perinatal suites, 6 Antepartum suites, 3 Operating suites, a 4 bed recovery room and a 7 station triage area. In February of 2011, our Triage area was converted into an OB Emergency Room which is staffed 24/7 by Certified Nurse Midwives.

We provide Inpatient and outpatient low and high-risk perinatal care, prenatal testing and treatment, antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum care, transitional and normal newborn care and pregnancy loss services.

SUMMARY:

Functions as a member of the Labor & Delivery (L&D) team, providing perioperative, clinical, environmental, and transportation support under the direction of the Registered Nurse. Responsible for prompt and effective problem resolution related to supplies and equipment, which impact patient care. Utilize AST standards, Operating Room (OR) standards, policies and procedures in performing duties related to functioning independently as surgical tech in cesarean section deliveries and other obstetrical surgical procedures.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Education:

Certificate or Associate Degree in surgical Technology from an accredited program

Licensure/Certification:

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. To achieve prior to completion of orientation and must maintain.

AST certification preferred.

Experience

  • Previous scrub experience in a perioperative or OB setting desirable

  • Solid knowledge base related to aseptic technique

  • Computer knowledge necessary to effectively utilize hospital systems

  • Minimum of 6 month work experience as a direct care giver in an acute hospital setting preferred

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Position requires the use of hands for simple and firm grasping and fine manipulating.

  • Position requires high level of mental concentration to attain established deadlines. Working environment includes frequent interruptions.

  • Has potential for exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous waste and chemicals. Working in a surgical environment may result in exposure to blood-borne pathogens, communicable diseases, and hazardous substances. Exposure is limited when established safety procedures and policies are followed.

  • Working weekends and holidays are necessary to meet staffing needs. Work on different shifts may be assigned as necessary to meet staffing needs.

  • Ability to:

  • Follow instructions and record patient information.

  • Prioritize assigned tasks and organize work.

  • Walk and stand for 90% of shift.

  • Concentrate and pay close attention to details for over 90% of time

  • Basic computer skills such as use of e-mail and simple word processing

  • Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with patients, families, and other employees
