Stryker Intellectual Property Manager in Portage, Michigan

The Intellectual Property Manager will provide support for Stryker's Instruments Division which has a diverse portfolio of products and technologies. The IP Manager will be responsible for managing the full patent lifecycle including: preliminary patentability assessments, liaise with counsel on drafting patent applications and office action responses, and maintenance/annuity decisions. The IP Manager will collaborate with the R&D team through all phases of the new product development process. The IP Manager will assist in performing validity and right-to-use activities. They will also support third-party acquisition initiatives. The IP Manager will participate in cross-divisional development projects, and support R&D personnel in multiple sites globally.

The IP Manager will participate in evaluation and continuous improvement of the IP Management organization’s systems and procedures to ensure effective and efficient operations. The key to success in this position requires excellent communication skills and the ability to organize work while handling multiple conflicting priorities.

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree required. Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Electrical Engineering preferred. Patent Agent registration preferred.

Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience required; 3+ years of experience in the medical device industry preferred.

  • Understanding of the USPTO patent prosecution process; understanding of foreign patent prosecution processes.

  • Experience performing IP searches.

  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to influence others and be appropriately assertive to challenge concepts and inspire innovation.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Ability to multitask.

Essential Duties:

  • Review invention disclosures, lead Invention Evaluation Boards, and guide patenting decisions.

  • Work with outside counsel to prepare and file patent applications and respond to office actions.

  • Engage with business to perform IP Assessments including IP right-to-use activity for new product launches.

  • Initiate and maintain market surveillance to drive strategic discussions.

  • Manage patent portfolios and strategies with business unit leadership.

  • Support patent assertions and defenses.

  • Support third-party acquisition initiatives.
