What You'll Do Here:

As the Market Research Manager, you will work with the product, UX and marketing teams to provide market, competitor and consumer insights supporting the development and execution of strategic plans. This position reports directly to the VP of Marketing and Communications and closely supports the SVP of Product.

The ideal candidate is a big-picture thinker who understands how a well-executed research strategy drives measurable results for the business, and is enthusiastic about personally performing the day-to-day duties required to build an insights program that positions the company for long-term growth.

  • Conduct research, both primary and leverage secondary to provide actionable insights. Independently manage most research, with support and guidance from Cengage or external partners on more complex studies:

  • Primary: conduct research to understand and predict consumer behavior, e.g.

  • Qualitative: focus groups, ethnographies, 1-1 interviews, etc.

  • Quantitative: concept tests, usage & attitude studies, post purchase, etc.

  • Secondary: Gather and analyze secondary data sources to identify emerging trends and address business issues

  • Manage full scope of research projects including:

  • Develop research plan based on business needs and learning priorities established with key business stakeholders

  • Consult with partners to recommend best methodology to answer business questions

  • Develop comprehensive research brief, that includes detailed learning areas and action standards, with stakeholder buy-in

  • As needed, identify best vendor to support efforts and manage relationship from negotiation through research design, analysis and delivery

  • Analyze and interpret data from multiple sources/inputs and create crisp, insightful presentation-quality charts

  • Deliver strong learning, in story-like presentation format that addresses all research objectives and includes actionable recommendations within needed timelines

  • Foster collaboration and insight sharing by establishing and maintaining online environment for internal stakeholders to access research summaries and recommendations

  • Manage category budget and finance processes

Skills You Will Need Here:

Basic Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • 5+ years’ experience in market research

  • Experience on market research provider side

  • Conversant with quant and qualitative modes of primary market research

  • Experience in segmentation, customer satisfaction, key purchase driver analysis

  • Experience with standard market research statistical methods, ranging from cross tabs to regression to conjoint analysis

  • Comprehensive and current understanding of research and analytical techniques and methodologies (notably Primary research, quantitative and qualitative)

  • Ability to effectively manage projects under very little supervision to achieve team goals and complete work assignments within established time frames.

  • Excellent interpersonal communication, engagement and influencing skills; confidence operating across different levels and with multi-functional stakeholders (up to Executive-level)

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively convey learning and actions to take.

  • Experience with Qualtrics preferred

  • Strong proficiency in development of PowerPoint charts and full decks; Strong Excel skills to review, calculate and analyze data. Proficiency in Tableau visualization and SPSS a plus

  • Strong bias for action, sense of urgency and results orientation

  • High-energy self-starter with ability to work calmly and productively in a fast-paced, quickly evolving and deadline driven environment

Preferred Experience

  • Client-side experience (working within a company to buy or field research, instead of selling it from a market research vendor)

  • Advanced degree (MBA or Social Sciences)

  • Experience in education market

  • Comfortable with stat packages, such as SPSS

  • Qualtrics admin experience

  • Academic and practical experience with a wide array of new product, brand, advertising and customer satisfaction research methodologies
