Job Objective:Responsible for planning, preparing and serving community meals and cleaning up afterward. Hot lunch meals are served Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Seasonally meals will be prepared for Hope at the Inn, our homeless shelter clients.

Oversees kitchen; prepares and serves meals
Plans daily meals in advance, ensuring meals are balanced, nutritious and varied. Planned meals may change to accommodate unanticipated donated food
Complies with applicable food handling, preparing, storing and record keeping requirements and sanitation regulations
Trains, supervises and appropriately utilizes volunteers, making sure they follow safety and food sanitation requirements
Keeps the kitchen and storage area clean and organized
Maintains an inventory of major food items and uses that information when planning meals and requesting supplies
Controls food costs by using inventory wisely and using products available through Feeding America and the commodities program.
Ensures that all food is properly stored and rotated
Advises officers/social worker regarding food and other supplies needed in a timely manner
Records donated food items in the gifts-in-kind log
Maintains a record of the number of meals served daily for lunch, including seconds
Follows proper operating instructions for the use of all kitchen appliances and equipment. Keeps all equipment clean and properly stored when not in use
Promptly reports equipment maintenance needs
Ensures a safe working environment and promptly reports any work-related accident or visitor/client injury
Provides a friendly and courteous service atmosphere for volunteers and clients and enforces policies relative to volunteer and client conduct.
The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal education, experience, skills, and/or abilities required for this position.
Education:High school diploma or equivalent
Experience: 2 years experience in food service, preferably in an institutional setting
Certifications: ServSafe certification required within 6 months of hire; valid Michigan driver’s license with clearance to drive from TSA insurance.
Proficient in using cooking utensils and kitchen equipment.
Ability to plan balanced, nutritious meals.
Strong organizational skills.
Able to read and comprehend instructions, and nutritional information and guidelines.
Strong interpersonal skills with a friendly, polite demeanor.
Ability to adhere to a fast-paced schedule and complete regular, seasonal, and special assigned tasks in a timely and effective manner.
Ability to effectively train and assign duties to volunteers to assure smooth operations.
Adhere to appropriate boundaries and ethics.
Demonstrate sensitivity with clients of diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.
Handle emergencies in a calm and logical manner.

Travel:Local travel to pick up supplies and food as necessary.
Working Conditions:While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; freezing temperatures (walk-in freezers); cold temperatures (walk-in coolers); extremely high temperatures (near stoves/ovens); fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals.At times the duties will involve working around individuals having infectious and/or communicable diseases.
