Position Summary(Basic Job Function)
This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides professional support. Responsibilities may include general business, science, medical, agricultural or other professional support functions. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.
Unit Position Summary
The Office of Supportive Services (OSS) at Michigan State University is committed to creating and maintaining a student-centered learning environment that encourages academic excellence; values the importance of an education that promotes a global vision; and nurtures and facilitates movement toward academic achievement and personal goals of students. OSS serves MSU students who are active participants in the TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program.
The Academic Assistance staff works directly with undergraduate TRIO SSS students to create a culture where academic excellence is the primary goal by providing support that enhances what is available on campus and facilitates an active and collaborative learning environment.
Responsibilities and Expectations
Knowledge of subject matter
Ability to effectively communicate subject matter
Respect toward others (tutees, tutors, TRIO staff, etc.)
Exchange information and ideas in various formats with students from diverse experiences.
Interest in helping others learn individually and in groups
Self-motivation and direction to work independently with limited supervision
Empathy for and understanding of a diverse group of students
Ability to listen and answer questions during tutoring sessions
Good time management and organization skills
Serve as a facilitator, not a second lecturer
Set goals and/or expectations during the first few sessions
Provide support for content and concept understanding, not direct answers to anything graded (homework, quizzes, projects, etc.)
Be open to and available for observations and follow-up conversations
Help tutee(s) learn how to learn the material
Help tutee(s) refine study skills and become independent learners
Document student participation in TRIO tutoring services.

Qualifications
Previous tutoring experience.
Ability to tutor multiple courses.
Have a high level of energy and enthusiasm; your job is to motivate SSS students.
Display a high level of cultural competency and sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student body.
