POSITION PURPOSE

The Optical Engineer II will innovate, design, develop and troubleshoot complex optical systems for sporting and targeting optics.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES

  • Applies both geometrical and physical optics principles to design optical components and optical systems

  • Designs, constructs, and executes experiments on optical/photonic concepts and devices for internal and external research and development

  • Assembles, aligns, troubleshoots, and constructs complex optical systems

  • Designs, develops, constructs and tests prototype products and components

  • Transitions prototype products and components to reliable, high-quality and manufacturable products and components

  • Works withengineers and technical staff to ensure detailed opto-mechanical designs meet product specifications and customer requirements

  • Provides manufacturing support to ensure products are built in accordance with product specifications and customer requirements

  • Defines specifications, sourcing and fabrication of optical components (lenses, prisms, mirrors, etc.)

  • Writes technical reports, prepares and presents technical information

  • Analyzes designs, performs trade studies, modeling, simulation, optimization, and other forms of analysis to predict component interactions and system performance around established requirements

  • Validates both optical components and optical systems at different development stages

  • Troubleshoots and resolves optical system performance issues

  • Performsroot-cause analysis and other problem solving activities to identify effective corrective actions and process improvements

  • Develops and devises methods and tools to ensure quality and reliability of finished products

  • Reviews and analyzes internal and external patent materials for novelty, usefulness, value, etc.

  • Drives customer orientation as a business philosophy to ensure the customer’s wants and needs are the priority of all management and employees

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Develops manufacturing, assembly and fabrication processes related to electro-optic sighting devices

  • Designs and optimizes visible-wavelength optical systems, such as Holographic sights, Terrestrial telescopes and Head-up displays

  • Designs and develops diffractive optical elements and systems, including gratings, image holograms, and holographic optical elements

  • Applies basic understanding of new technologies and trends in optical imaging technology

  • Applies basic knowledge of weapon optics product knowledge and understanding of the design, development and transition to production requirements in both commercial and military markets

  • Applies basic knowledge of weapons, types, calibers, and accessories on those systems that drive optical performance and interoperability requirements of the optical device systems when integrated to a weapon

  • Applies basic understanding of calculus, linear algebra, geometrical optics, wave equations, Fourier transforms, plane and solid geometry and trigonometry

  • Reads, analyzes and interprets scientific and technical journals; responds to common inquiries or complaints from internal or external customers; effectively presents information to management

  • Solves practical problems and deals with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; interprets a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form

  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Physics from four-year college or university

  • 0-2 years’ experience in a product development environment

  • Experience with opto-mechanical design and assembly, including 3D CAD (Solidworks, Pro/E, Catia, etc.)

  • Competent in at least one optical design software package (e.g. Zemax, CODE V, LightTools) is preferred
